Our mission
A school for the snow-capped village

Providing free, multilingual education to empower children, preserve culture and transform the future of an entire community.

"…I want to stand alongside my Nepalese brothers and sisters on a path of dignity and growth that these proud, strong and gentle people deserve, aware that the future, like the sun, rises for all of us in the east, over the snow-capped peaks of the Himalaya…"
Alberto Grignolo

Dolpo, the land, its people

Dolpo is a mountainous region located in Karnali Pradesh province, in the far west of Nepal. It is surrounded by the imposing peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. Despite being a remote and sparsely populated region, Dolpo is home to numerous monasteries and holds a deep Buddhist spirituality.

Dunai is the main town of the Dolpo district, with around 3,000 inhabitants. It sits at an altitude of 2,000 metres along the Thuli Bheri river. It serves as a market hub and is connected to the rest of Nepal by a small airstrip at Juphal, or a three-day overland journey from the nearest town in Lower Dolpo.

The school we support offers free education to children, allowing them to step away from domestic work and build a better future. It teaches in three languages to open new opportunities and preserve local culture. It is our hope that the school will improve the lives of the entire community and bring hope to this remote mountain region.

The "DOLPO BON SOCIETY AND SCHOOL" of Dunai

The Dolpo Bon Society is a non-profit organisation recognised by the Dolpo District Administration since 2003. Its goal is to improve living conditions in the rural areas of Dolpo. Its founder, Barle Khenpo Geshe Nyima Kunkyap Rinpoche, is a lama originally from Dolpo. After years of teaching at a Tibetan university, he returned to his home village in 2009 to create a school for the children of the region. The school provides free services and only parents who can afford it contribute food to sustain the children and teachers during the school year. The school is open from March to December, closing during the three harshest winter months.

Our impact

In a place where childhood is often marked by work rather than study, the Dolpo Bon School gives children a real chance to build a better future. The school provides free education, safe accommodation and a welcoming environment where students can grow, with lessons taught in English, Nepali and Tibetan. Founded as a primary school, it has expanded its curriculum to include middle school, welcoming a growing number of children every year.

Since 2020 we have been working alongside the Lama and the school principal to support its growth, improve the living conditions of students and teachers, and extend both the educational pathway and the school’s capacity, so that it can offer a better learning experience to an ever-growing number of children. It has not been, is not, and will not be an easy or short journey: like almost everything that matters in life, it requires time and patience — to bridge the physical and cultural distance, to overcome the great logistical challenges, and to nurture the slow but necessary process of accompanying the women and men of tomorrow as they grow.

In 2024, significant steps were taken towards the completion of the secondary school cycle. With the support of the Foundation, the school increased its capacity to 100 students and, in just six months, a new building was completed. The new structure houses a multipurpose hall and new teachers’ quarters, while existing spaces were converted into larger dormitories, improving the living conditions of students.

The Foundation also strengthened the quality of teaching through partnerships with schools in Italy (H-Farm) and Nepal (Bloom School), contributing to the professional development of teaching staff. These interventions, together with the improvement of infrastructure, are helping to build a stronger and more self-sufficient community.

Through these initiatives, the Foundation continues to believe that education is the key to transforming people’s lives, opening new opportunities for the children of Dolpo and empowering the community, today and for generations to come.

The future we dream of

Over the next 3 to 5 years, we have big ambitions for the school. We want to extend the educational pathway through middle school, offering a better future to children up to the age of 13 to 14. We aim to expand the facilities with new classrooms and an improved dormitory capable of hosting up to 80 students, providing them with better living conditions than those available today. We care deeply about their wellbeing, working to improve their diet and hygiene conditions.

We also want to raise the quality of education, offering teacher training so that students can benefit from a modern and well-rounded learning experience. We plan to provide scholarships for students to continue their studies in Kathmandu once they complete the school programme. In the coming year, we hope to further expand the facilities and provide a stable internet connection, allowing us to integrate courses from Italy into the local curriculum. This project requires time, dedication and a great deal of patience — but we will not stop until quality education becomes the norm for every child in the land of snow.

Healtcare

In Dolpo, falling ill can mean having no one to turn to. We have built a real and lasting healthcare facility: a physical place to receive care, the tools to provide it, and a qualified professional to be there.

Food & Nutrition

Ensuring food in a remote area means planning months in advance. Alongside immediate supply, we invest in solutions that make the community increasingly self-sufficient.

Trasportation

Dolpo cannot be reached by conventional means. Every bag of cement, every book, every medicine must travel mountain trails to reach its destination. Logistics is the condition that makes everything else possible.

School

The school is not just a place to learn, but a space where children find warmth, food and attention. Keeping it running requires people, materials and resources every single day.
